Commodore Thurman Newell born October 10, 1888 at Prairie Center, Illinois in La Salle County. He never used his first name and was always know as Thurman. Thurman married Lillian Ethel (Graffunder) on October 18, 1924. Thurman was 36; Lillian was 26 when they married. In 1916, Thurman came to Pomeroy Iowa by train from Illinois. He left Illinois because he got frustrated wioth his brothers. He farmed a few years helping people out in Pomeroy, and then he moved to Moorland Iowa. Thurman rented 120 acres he lived in a shed, that later we called the chicken house. Then the landowner built a new house in 1924. Thurman and Lillian went together for 6 weeks before they got married. They had two sons, one lived only a couple of hours and was not given a name. Glenn Julius was born January 19, 1930 at home near Moorland Iowa. Thurman passed away October 4, 1965 from a stroke and was also legally blind. Lillian died on December 25, 1953 from cancer of the liver. Thurman, Lillian, baby and Glenn are buried at the Fulton Cemetery near Moorland Iowa.

Some of the Newell's came over on the Mayflower. They had several castles in England which people used to tour. They were relatives to the former Prime Minister of England, Winston Churchill.
